WHITE PIGEON —Canteen Services, a private Grand Rapids-based food provider, is once again preparing lunches for the students in this St. Joseph County community. The White Pigeon Board of Education gave the company a vote of confidence by renewing its contract with the district. Last year was the first year that White Pigeon engaged Canteen.
But in Lenawee County, Adrian Public Schools seemed just as pleased with its first year of running its own food service. In 1995, Adrian did not renew its contract with the privately-owned Marriott Food Services for managing its cafeteria and school catering operations, choosing instead to bring the work "in-house." Though the district did raise school lunch prices, it also cut costs. The results, in terms of a comparison with the old Marriott contract, were slightly higher revenue and slightly lower costs.
