MARQUETTE-The Marquette County Board of Commissioners has reviewed a report on whether to sell or keep utility systems at the former Sawyer Air Force Base, which is currently owned by the United States Air Force. In August 2000, Marquette County contracted with the private firm Matrix Design Corp. to analyze the base's electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, and wastewater utilities. Marquette County expects to take title to the base and the utilities that come with it in the next year.
Commissioners have decided, based on the report's recommendations, to proceed with the additional work necessary to acquire the utilities. Currently, the intention of the commissioners is to retain full ownership of the utilities but contract out the day-to-day management.
