I am writing to applaud your article in the Winter 1999 issue concerning the $50 million Michigan schools will receive for the 1999-2000 school year. I feel the public needs to be aware of why there is a genuine need for more federal aid in education and the true costs involved in improving our schools. The article did also point out the fact that if the federal government does not extend its support beyond the 1999-2000 year, then the state and local governments may be forced to raise taxes. I think that if we as a society truly want our schools to be the best they can be, we as citizens need to make some sacrifices. By investing in our children today, we are, in fact, investing in our very own future.
