Dozens of policy research institutes focus on national and federal government issues. Their work does not need to be duplicated. The Mackinac Center fills a void by shifting public opinion to change policies at the state and local level, where governments are smaller, more accessible, and closer to home.
These changes impact more than just Michigan, however. Buoyed in part by the Mackinac Center's success, dozens of state-focused policy research institutes have been established in other states to bring sound policies to their citizens. In fact, the Mackinac Center plays a leading role in mentoring many of these groups by providing technical and strategic advice and by sharing successful ideas.
