Schools-of-choice. Charter schools. Proposal A. Major Michigan school reforms all, but only steps in the direction of the kind of academic excellence parents want for their school-age children. And each of these steps has been made in the teeth of strenuous opposition by forces that seem bent upon keeping the failing system and even making it worse. As a result, what progress that has been made - and there is measurable progress - is far from satisfactory.
What is the future of education reform? Come and listen as one of the architects of national education policy talks about charting the educational course for Michigan and the nation in the 21st century. On Feb. 25, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy will host U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra as speaker at our February Issues and Ideas Luncheon. Hoekstra chairs the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Education and the Workforce Committee and is also a member of the House Budget Committee.
