The Mackinac Center for Public Policy is pleased to host monthly Issues & Ideas Luncheons in Lansing. These luncheons, which feature experts on a diverse array of subjects, offer a forum that enhances and broadens the policy debate to include theoretical and philosophical ideals-and suggestions for achieving them. These luncheons, designed to reinforce policy-makers' understanding of the principles of sound economics and the free society, offer a unique opportunity that is open to all legislative staff, policy specialists, and other interested friends.

The events of Sept. 11 have inspired fear and a willingness to accept government inroads on our civil liberties in the name of security. Does the "war on terrorism" warrant the kinds of steps-such as national I.D. cards and Internet tapping-being contemplated, and in some cases carried out, by government? If so, at what point does America "cease to be America?" Where do we draw the line and say "no more" to steps taken for our protection?
Who better to engage in a lively discussion of these issues than Kary L. Moss, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan? Moss will be our guest at the Mackinac Center's monthly Issues and Ideas luncheon, and will deliver her talk, "Preserving Civil Liberties in Times of Trouble," followed by questions and discussion.
The recipient of many awards and holder of many prestigious positions of influence throughout the state, Moss worked in the national office of the ACLU Women's Rights Project prior to returning to Michigan. She obtained her J.D. degree in 1987 from CUNY Law School at Queen's College, a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in 1982, and her B.A. from James Madison College at Michigan State University.
