Public workers in Michigan pay hundreds or thousands of dollars per year in dues to unions, but it’s very difficult for workers to find out how that money is being spent. The reason is that Michigan has weak reporting requirements for government unions, asking for only a few numbers on spending in broad categories. Under this system, union members cannot assess if their union is spending their dues money wisely or not.

Nathan Mehrens will explain how Michigan can fix this problem by adopting a federal model that requires more disclosure by unions. Mehrens is an labor expert who previously worked at the U.S. Department of Labor and helped implement these same transparency reporting requirements at the federal level. Nathan Mehrens is president of Americans for Limited Government Foundation. He previously served as ALGF's General Counsel. Prior to his service at ALGF, he was Special Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor. He previously served as Director of Research and General Counsel for several nonprofit organizations that monitor and advocate on labor union issues.
