Global competition and corporate accountability have reduced the opportunities open to labor unions. Some employees still want unions, and companies need to understand these workers’ concerns. In the public sector, unionization has increased significantly, due to limited accountability and the absence of competition. The resulting labor contracts do not necessarily serve the public interest, nor the interest of some employees. There is an alternative, however, based on New Zealand’s experience with guaranteeing employees choice in representation.
Dr. Bill Conerly is a consultant from Lake Oswego, Ore., who specializes in applying economics to business decisions. He holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and is the author of “Businomics: From the Headlines to Your Bottom Line — How to Profit in Any Economic Sector.” He is chairman of the board of the Cascade Policy Institute in Oregon and a member of Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s Council of Economic Advisors. He has been quoted in Fortune magazine, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and interviewed on CNN, CNBC and “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer."
Following his remarks, Dr. Conerly will answer questions from the audience.

The Purpose of the Issues & Ideas Forum
The nature of the legislative process is such that public policy debates are often framed by specific constituencies and political pragmatism rather than by sound principles. On occasion, these principles are most effectively conveyed by a single case study. By offering a forum for wide-ranging discussion, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy hopes to broaden the debate to include theoretical and philosophical ideals — and how to achieve them. The best interests of Michigan citizens can be served only when legislation incorporates our best understanding of legal, economic, psychological, moral and scientific principles.
