The Mackinac Center's analysis of the proposal for early payment of county property taxes is at the epicenter of the debate over whether the plan constitutes a tax increase. The Center's critique has appeared in many outlets, but was featured prominently in the Sept. 15 Detroit News, both in a front-page story and in an op-ed by the Center's Jack McHugh.
By an overwhelming margin, respondents to a Detroit News "CyberSurvey" agree with the Center that the proposed shift is a tax hike, as does the editorial cartoon. The e-mails posted at the CyberSurvey site are full of colorful insights.
