The Michigan Legislature in May 2000 approved the introduction of competition in retail power supplies. Ending the regional monopoly structure in the generation of electricity was intended to provide customers with choice, lower rates and improved service quality. But attempts are underway to reverse the course of this restructuring.
It is incumbent on lawmakers, the media and the public to carefully consider whether such a dramatic policy reversal is warranted. Toward this end, Dr. Bolema will discuss current conditions in Michigan’s electricity market, and critique the proposals to curtail competition in power supplies. Participants will also receive a copy of the Mackinac Center’s policy brief on the issue.
Dr. Bolema holds a Ph.D. in economics from Michigan State University, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Prior to his current position at Central Michigan University, he was an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. He also was formerly on the faculties of the Wayne State University School of Business Administration and the George Mason University School of Law.
The luncheon begins promptly at 12:00 noon. Please make reservations for yourself and any guests by noon on July 19, 2004, by calling the Mackinac Center at (989) 631-0900 or send your e-mail to: rsvp@mackinac.org.
The Purpose of the Issues & Ideas Luncheon
The nature of the legislative process is such that public policy debates are often framed by specific constituencies and political pragmatism rather than sound principles. By offering a forum for wide-ranging discussion, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy hopes to broaden the debate to include theoretical and philosophical ideals—and how to achieve them. The best interests of Michigan citizens can only be served when legislation incorporates our best understanding of legal, economic, psychological, moral and scientific principles.
