Depending on your perspective, Grover Norquist is either the “Darth Vader of conservative politics” and the “dark wizard of the right” or he’s a principled voice for smaller government and more freedom for individuals. The long-time president of Americans for Tax Reform has been a major political player in Washington D.C. and all across the nation for decades.
At Norquist’s urging, in 2017, the United States passed the first major federal tax cut in decades – flattening the code and lowering taxes for virtually everyone. He has also been key in arguing for lower regulatory burdens, something the Trump Administration has largely been taking up. On the other hand, the federal government has continued to increase spending, the president has urged large restrictions on vaping and many states swung to the left politically in the 2018 election.
The Mackinac Center is pleased to host a Q&A with Grover Norquist to discuss these issues and more. The conversation will cover tax, regulatory and political changes at the state and federal level and what big issues are on the horizon.
Grover Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform, a taxpayer-advocacy group he founded in 1985 at President Reagan’s request. ATR works to limit the size and cost of government, opposes higher taxes at the federal, state and local levels and supports tax reform that moves towards taxing consumed income one time at one rate.
