Public policy choices can have profound consequences on the decisions individuals make about their own opportunities — where to live, work, invest and raise families. What can government leaders do to influence those choices? Respect economic freedom.
The Fraser Institute in Canada has, for 14 years, produced the Economic Freedom of North America index, designed to measure economic liberty. Our speaker, Dean Stansel, Ph.D., is a co-author of the index.
Michigan was ranked 34th in the 2018 edition, and where a state falls in that ranking matters because that position is associated with vital measures of human well-being.
The database created for this index has been used in more than 250 scholarly articles, including a 2018 study by Stansel, titled “Targeted State Economic Development Incentives and Entrepreneurship.”
In addition, Mr. Stansel has extended his economic freedom research to include metropolitan statistical areas across the United States. He will discuss findings from his recent reports and their related policy implications for Michigan and elsewhere.
Speaker:
Dean Stansel is an economist and research associate professor at the O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Before entering academia, he wrote more than 60 fiscal policy-related publications for the Cato Institute. He has also written two policy studies for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, including “A Prosperity Agenda for Michigan Cities.” His work has been cited in numerous academic journals and popular newspapers, such as the New York Times, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.
Lunch is free for attendees who RSVP. Registration is required by February 8. Please register online at mackinac.org/events, email events@mackinac.org or call 989-698-1905. If you cannot attend, the event is livestreamed on our website and on our Facebook page and can be watched at any time.
