Forbes to Deliver Major Policy Address on November 30 at Mackinac Center

MIDLAND—Republican presidential hopeful Steve Forbes will deliver a major policy address on Social Security at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, Michigan, on Tuesday, November 30 at 4:00 p.m. At 4:50, following the by-invitation-only event—to which all news media are invited—Forbes will hold a 30-minute news conference, followed by a reception at the Ashman Court Hotel across Main Street from the Center.

"The Mackinac Center is delighted that Mr. Forbes has accepted our invitation—which has been extended to all major presidential candidates—to address issues important to Michigan voters and the nation at large," said Mackinac Center President Lawrence Reed. "We hope that throughout the 2000 campaign season, other candidates will take advantage of our offer, and that we can thereby help citizens make the best-informed choice for president in the new millennium," Reed said.

On the campaign stump, Forbes has made no secret of the fact that he favors a Social Security privatization plan that would "deliver increased retirement income to every American worker." Forbes says that with the plan he has in mind, "most of your Social Security taxes will be deposited directly into your own private account. The money belongs to you. The government can' t touch it."

Democratic candidate Bill Bradley and Republican John McCain also have expressed interest in making a policy address at Mackinac Center headquarters, according to Reed.
