MIDLAND — Total compensation numbers for nearly every public school district superintendent in Michigan, along with their current contracts, are now available in a searchable database maintained by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
Originally launched in 2012, the online database provides the contracts for public school superintendents and estimates their total compensation using additional data published by school districts. The resource equips concerned parents, citizens, taxpayers and media with the information they need to compare the compensation and benefits of superintendents and scrutinize the people who act as CEOs of districts that educate Michigan schoolchildren.
“This is the first, best stop for anyone looking to get an important glimpse into how Michigan school districts pay their leaders,” said Ben DeGrow, director of education policy for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

In some cases, a superintendent’s actual compensation may vary slightly from the number in the database. The database uses a standard contribution rate to MPSERS, the statewide school retirement system, to estimate a district’s contribution to its superintendent’s pension. In addition, some information publicly reported by districts may not be up to date.
Of the superintendents included in the database, 32 have total estimated compensation packages worth $250,000 or more; 109 receive $200,000 or more each year.
Approximately 90 percent of Michigan school districts have responded to the Mackinac Center’s requests for information and the database has 523 current contracts. Two related databases maintained by the Mackinac Center — the Michigan School District Revenue and Expenditure Report and the Michigan School District Collective Bargaining Agreements — have also been updated.
