MIDLAND, Mich. — After the Michigan Senate voted to bail out Detroit Public Schools with a package of bills that threatens to severely limit school choice, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy calls on the House of Representatives to protect the needs of all students, including those educated in Detroit charter schools.
Mackinac Center Education Policy Director Ben DeGrow said parents need more choice in where to send their children to school in Detroit, not more centralized control. DeGrow issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s Tuesday vote.
The bill creating a Detroit Education Commission will prevent students and parents from accessing needed educational choices. This entity would add an unnecessary layer of bureaucratic oversight with the power to stop new charter schools from opening. More funds should follow Detroit students directly to their chosen schools and classrooms, rather than trickle through a top-heavy district office and its expensive contract obligations. Today’s legislative move takes control in the wrong direction.
