Please join us for this Mackinac Center Club Mid "telephone town hall" event featuring Michael Q. McShane, Ph.D. and research fellow for Education Policy Studies with The American Enterprise Institute. Dr. McShane is author of the recently published book, “New and Better Schools: The Supply Side of School Choice.” Though private school choice has increased significantly throughout the United States, McShane asks why recent reforms have not triggered a large increase in high-quality private school options.
Also joining the conversation is Bruce Braun, Superintendent of Michigan District Lutheran Schools Missouri Synod, to share his perspective on the state of private schools in Michigan, and the viability of expanded school choice.
We are proud to partner with The American Enterprise Institute, the Michigan Catholic Conference and the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools in order to hold this important conversation and consider how to improve school choice in Michigan.
Michael Q. McShane is a research fellow in education policy studies at AEI. He is the coeditor, with Frederick Hess, of “Common Core Meets Education Reform” (Teachers College Press, 2013). He is also the coauthor of “President Obama and Education Reform: The Personal and the Political” (Palgrave MacMillan, 2012). His analyses have been published widely in technical journals and reports including Education Finance and Policy. He has contributed to more popular publications such as Education Next, The Huffington Post, National Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He began his career as an inner-city high school teacher in Montgomery, Alabama.
Bruce Braun was born in Milwaukee and attended Lutheran Schools through twelfth grade. He graduated from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois in 1977 and began teaching at Lutheran North High School in 1977. In his first year he taught Old Testament and Church History and in subsequent years added Geography, Health, New Testament and Physical Education. While at Lutheran North he had added opportunities to grow through coaching, counseling and bus driving.
In 1990 he started a new calling as Assistant Principal at Lutheran High School Westland. Here he continued to teach and coach while becoming active in his children’s school. In 1993 he became the Principal at Guardian Lutheran School in Dearborn. He stayed here until Jan. 1st of 1999 when he accepted a Call to be Assistant Superintendent for the Michigan District. He served here for seven years and nine years ago became the Superintendent of Schools.
Bruce met his wife Jayne while at River Forest. They have been married for thirty eight years and are blessed with three adult children Dan, Brett and Cara. Bruce enjoys reading, sports, slow running and walking the dog in his leisure time.
