Detroit-area members of the media have high praise for Michigan Capitol Confidential in a story about the Center’s news outlet posted today at Columbia Journalism Review.

Bill Shea of Crain’s Detroit Business told CJR that the Mackinac Center is a “professional and responsive” organization and “a serious player in the state conversation,” noting that he thinks “It’s hard not to use them” as a source.

Ingrid Jacques, deputy editorial page editor at The Detroit News, said “I find them to be extremely well-informed and helpful.”

Stephen Henderson, editorial page editor at the Detroit Free Press, told CJR that while he disagrees with Center analysts on certain issues, “they seem to want to raise the intellectual stakes in every discussion,” adding “generally, they’re a plus on the policy debate landscape.”

Jacques added that CapCon is “an informative site that does break stories, despite a small staff.” CJR also quotes an unnamed “writer at a traditional in-state news outlet” as saying “they’ve broken some big stories that the traditional media has ignored.”
