About 80 percent of teacher contracts ratified in the last two years do not base compensation on performance, despite a 2010 bill signed into law by Gov. Jennifer Granholm requiring it, Education Policy Director Michael Van Beek told Frank Beckmann on WJR AM760 today.
Van Beek explained some contracts appear to make a mockery of the law, giving teachers $1 in “merit pay.” Most of the districts are clinging to the single-salary schedule, which pays teachers based on longevity and college credits earned instead of how well they do their job.
Van Beek also discussed the matter on "The Tony Conley Show" on WILS AM1320, while Huffington Post and The Daily Caller also wrote about it.
