Michigan Legislator Invokes the Tenth

We’ve already noted that officials in some states are invoking the tenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution as a way to prevent the implementation of a federal government takeover in their states.

The Detroit Free Press reports on such an effort in Michigan. Rep. Brian Calley, R-Portland, is leading the charge.

Calley introduced a resolution last week to place before Michigan voters a state constitutional amendment to prohibit mandatory participation in a national health care plan. He said that right is guaranteed by the 10th Amendment limitation on federal power in the U.S. Constitution.

Calley said health care insurance changes may or may not be in the interest of many Michiganders. But they should be able to decide that for themselves, he said, and not be forced to accept it by decree from Washington.
